Recently, Airbnb publicly announced the transition toward a fully remote workforce.

Since then, the company has been positively recognized for embracing initiatives regarding the “future of work.” For doing this, Airbnb has seriously considered the role of technology in its HR management model and the benefits of a life-work balance for its employees.

Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, has also explained that, since the COVID-19 pandemic, he has carefully planned this transition to a remote workplace. Thus, he committed to implementing measures to add flexibility to recruitment and hiring processes, wages payments, and work schedules.

In this blog post, we’ll tell you all about how growing high-tech specialized companies are massively adopting remote work.

High-Tech Gig Economy and Remote Work

The expanding gig economy has transformed the way we work and conceive businesses and professional careers. According to K.R Sanjiv, “Amid the Covid-19 outbreak, working from home become part of the new normal for many.”

For instance, remote working has been the norm for most freelancers, who make up an estimated 20% to 30% of the global workforce. Meanwhile, companies have transitioned to fully remote work and building interesting talent pools.

“As team become increasingly distributed and productivity trumps face time, this sizable talent pool could offer an efficient path to gaining the kinds of skills and knowledge to accelerate innovation,” explains Sanjiv.

Currently, gig workers and remote workers integrate an important part of the global labor workforce. In the US, this has benefited businesses since the COVID-19 outbreak. The Fletcher School analyzes the contributions of these kinds of workers to the American economy.

It asserts that the pandemic’s evolution and policy responses have shown that the US has benefited from both the labor force that could socially distance and work from home and the gig workers, who supported the delivery of essential services during lockdowns.

Brian Chesky: Learn What Airbnb CEO Said About Remote Work

On April 28, Chesky announced a new HR management policy for Airbnb employees in the US and Canada.

He said salaries would be determined by a single pay tier for a given role instead of location-based tiers, starting in September.

Consequently, employees from these countries will work from an “anywhere” model, enjoying the full benefits of a balance between professional and personal life.

Furthermore, Chesky called location-based salaries “an outdated model.” He also said:

“Do I get greater productivity by keeping you tethered to an office and limiting my talent pool or allow people to work from Ohio, Canada, or somewhere else? Most of us have found that we’re at an advantage being more flexible.”

From Chesky’s point of view, companies can be at a disadvantage if they oppose remote work.
